These institutions contribute to keeping Castine a vibrant year-round community. Some places of interest are the Wilson Museum, Castine Historical Society, and Witherle Memorial Library. Popular activities here in Castine are; hiking trails in Witherle Woods, swimming in Wadsworth Cove, sailing, motoring, kayaking as well as golf and tennis. The Visitor’s Center close to the harbor welcomes you with a full range of current events and places to explore.
Penobscot is located in the southern part of Hancock County, having Penobscot Bay on the west, and Southern Bay (an extension of Castine Harbor) in the southern part. Its name is from the Indian “Penobskeag,” or “Penopeauke,” signifying a rocky place. Numerous small farms provide fresh local food to the surrounding communities. In the summer Pierce’s, Wight’s and Turtle Ponds are only minutes away for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The principal village is at the head of Northern Bay where Northern Bay Market is conveniently located. This small community store does not only offer a gathering place for the locals but also essential groceries, local seafood (when in season) and more.
